Transforming a Front Yard to Enhance Curb Appeal

Writer's picture: Laura OsteenLaura Osteen

The front yard of this beautiful home just didn't do it any favors. It was boring, uninspiring, and made the house look imposing from the road. It really needed some curb appeal to complement the home’s style.

Design

A previous owner had installed an asphalt pullout that took up 15 feet deep of the front yard and ran the entire length of the property. This parking space was unnecessary for the current homeowners, who already have a long front driveway. By recapturing this space, we created more separation from the road and better scaled the plantings along the house.

To add dimension and soften the home’s appearance, I planted a row of Callery pear trees in front of the house. These trees not only add structure but also provide a beautiful display of white flowers in the spring, complementing the house's color and adding lush greenery in the spring-fall.

While I don’t often add lawns to front yards, in this case, it made sense. The front yard is the only suitable place for grass, and since the house is on a court with minimal traffic, it’s a safe space for kids to play. This makes the front yard more usable and family-friendly.

A new bluestone front walkway now leads guests up to the front door, adding elegance and complementing the home’s style.

Given the formal nature of the house, we needed to add structure to the design. All plantings are balanced and organized to bring life to the space while maintaining a sense of order. We chose a color palette of greens, grays, whites, purples, and yellows to complement the home. Boxwoods frame the design, while westringea, abelia, lomandra, and azaleas provide evergreen structure. Plants like kangaroo paw, lavender, hydrangea, and lamb’s ear add vibrant bursts of color during the spring, summer, and fall.

A unique aspect of this project is the front yard dog area. The layout of the home includes a door off the kitchen that opens to the front side area. We wanted to create a protected space for the homeowners to let their dog out while isolating where the dog does its business. A low white fence encloses this area, ensuring it works seamlessly within the front yard design.

After

Now, the curb appeal of this house complements its overall aesthetic beautifully. It looks like the yard should have always looked this way. The homeowners are thrilled with the outcome, and we are too.
